hazardous household Wastes and materials

State law requires all loads be covered before transport.

The following items are collected as part of the Marathon County Hazardous Household Waste Collection Program and are FREE for drop-off for all residents in Marathon or Shawano Counties*. You must call and make an appointment to drop off hazardous items – call 715-446-3101 x 100.  

*Lincoln County residents must pay at the time of drop off but may seek reimbursement from Lincoln County Solid Waste Department for up to $75

  • Creosote

  • Degreasers

  • Fuel* (if amount exceeds 5 gallons)

  • Oil/gas mixtures* (if amount exceeds 5 gallons)

  • Ether

  • Cleaning Solvents

  • Drain Cleaners

  • Dry Cleaning Fluids

  • Gun Cleaners

  • Fungicides

  • Herbicides

  • Insecticides

  • Metal cleaners

  • Mildew cleaners

  • Oven cleaners

  • Floor/furniture polish

  • Nail polish removers

  • Thinners

  • Oil-based paint

  • Varnish

  • Turpentine

  • Hobby materials/chemicals

  • Photography chemicals

  • Aerosol paint cans with paint in it (empties can be recycled)

  • Anti-freeze* (if amount exceeds 5 gallons)
    * For less than 5 gallons of these items you do NOT need to make an appointment.
    They are accepted any time during our open hours.

  • Compressed fuel cylinders

  • Explosives

  • Freon

  • Latex paint (not hazardous; learn how to properly dispose of Latex Paint here)

  • Fire extinguishers (if empty take to landfill to recycle as scrap for free)

  • Medical waste

  • Radioactive material

  • Water-based stains or caulks
